Cornflower là một loại cây chưa có tên chính thức trong tiếng Việt, từ điển chỉ nói nó là "một loại cây dại (mọc trong ruộng ngô)". Trong bản dịch Lolita, cornflower được dịch thành Thanh Cúc, bắt nguồn từ màu xanh biếc đặc trưng cho hoa của loài cây này, và từ việc nó thuộc họ Cúc.

Cornflower thuộc họ Cúc, có tên khoa học là Centaurea cyanus, ngoài tên cornflower, nó còn được gọi là Bachelors button, Bluebottle, Boutonniere flower, Hurtsickle, Cyani flower. Loài hoa này hay mọc hoang dại trong các ruộng ngô, lúa,... có lẽ vì thế trong tiếng Anh, nó được gọi bằng cái tên dân dã là cornflower. Trong các văn bản tiếng Việt, khi nhắc đến nó người ta dùng rất nhiều tên tự đặt như: hoa ngô, hoa cúc áo, hoa thanh bình, thanh cúc.

Thanh Cúc là loài hoa rất được tổng thống Mỹ John F Kennedy yêu thích, là quốc hoa của Estonia từ năm 1968, và là biểu tượng của nhiều đảng phái, tổ chức chính trị khác.
